Dr. Matthew Jeromson

Post-Doctoral Researcher
University of Canberra

I have enjoyed an academic career that has placed me both in my home city of Auckland and in Canberra.

Since 2014 when I started doing research, I have had the opportunity to meet a lot of international and domestic colleagues, both on home turf, and abroad.

I have crossed the Southern Ocean twice and been a part of four research cruises in total - one of which plonked me on the Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica, for three weeks with five other crew mates.

When I am off ship and out of the office, I enjoy travelling with or to visit friends and family, music (whether playing or listening), and Ultimate frisbee - which I have played since High School.

My Research

My research focuses on understanding ice ocean interactions in the past using novel isotope proxies. I am interested in beryllium isotopes, specifically how they may be extracted from sediment or water samples, their development as a proxy for processes across the Antarctic coastal environment, and their application in paleo-studies. My goal is to combine geochemical and other proxy datasets with ocean observation data and models to establish robust polar oceanographic reconstructions on Quaternary timescales.
